From offering rental opportunities to comfortable options for hosting extended family, coach homes and garden suites have been an amazing development.
The coach house offering has been a big part of our new builds, particularly across the Ottawa-Gatineau region, as well as down towards Prince Edward County.
We’ve had a lot of interest from Toronto too, where currently home owners are only allowed to build if their property backs onto a laneway.
This restriction has made it into the news recently, as homeowners with older ‘garden suites’ in Toronto are discovering they may not use these structures as residential space. Policy needs to catch up to necessity, it seems.
“In July, the city passed a motion to expand housing options in the city. While coach houses are included in its list, it’s unclear how long the consultation process will take and whether there will be enough support to move ahead to formally allow residential coach houses in Toronto.” CBC article
